Your Wage Is A Drug

What paid employment costs you that a payslip never admits, and what solopreneurship demands in return.

You know your number, right? It’s the dollars that hit your account every fortnight, same day, same more or less amount.

Year after year.

You build your life around its rhythm without ever consciously deciding to. Rent, groceries, car lease, the gym membership you sometimes use, all of it timed to that pulse.

Employment is a metronome. And a metronome like your job is addictive because it lets you stop thinking about time altogether.

Your solo business is not a metronome

Because you’re the one generating the beat. No one else.

Some weeks are great. Other weeks you generate nothing.

This is what ends many solo business dreams. People talk about the workload and the loneliness, but it’s actually the arrhythmia.

Income arrives in lumps and gaps instead of a steady tick. You articles on Substack either sink without a murmur or soar with 10,000 hearts. You commit to a $1,000 ad spend on Meta Business Suite and don’t land a single sale. Or you get so overloaded with new business you have no time for your family and friends.

You’re right to be nervous

Your nervous system, trained for years on the predictable teat of corporate largesse, treats this arrhythmia as a threat.

Solopreneurship carries real financial risk that a payslip doesn’t.

You could work sixty hours in a week and earn nothing if your client delays payment, if the deal falls through, if you spent the week on non-billable admin work because, well, there’s nobody else to do it.

Employment insulates you from this. Your employer absorbs the volatility of the market and hands you a smoothed-out version of it. That smoothing is worth something. Pretending otherwise, like the ‘business in a box’ crowd do, is dishonest and it gets people into genuine trouble.

A regular wage is risk management

I’m not going to take the cheap shot and wave away the wage as some kind of trap for the unambitious.

A regular income is a legitimate, rational, often wise choice. There, I said it.

A regular wage buys certainty, and that certainty has a price that some people happily pay: a lower upside in exchange for a floor that doesn’t move.

If you’ve got a mortgage, dependants, or a low tolerance for financial stress, preferring a wage is neither cowardice nor a character flaw.

It’s risk management, and risk management is a skill worth having for employees and business owners alike.

How solopreneurship earns its keep

Employment gives you the floor, and it also gives you a ceiling.

That ceiling is invisible until you’ve been pressing against it for a decade. Your value to an employer is capped by the org chart, by budget cycles, by the awkward fact that your manager’s manager has never actually seen your work up close.

You can be extraordinary and still get a 3% raise because that’s what the policy allows this year.

The wage smooths your income, sure, but it also smooths your effort back down to the average, because there’s never a corporate mechanism that rewards you for being twice as good.

Operating your solo business removes the ceiling along with the floor. That’s the trade, stated as plainly as I can, and anyone who tells you it’s more complicated is trying to sell you something.

There is no buffer

If you’re brilliant at what you do and you’re solo, the market pays you what you’re worth. If you’re mediocre, the market tells you that too, fast and without HR softening the blow.

That speed is the part people underestimate. Employment gives you feedback on a delay, filtered through performance reviews and quarterly check-ins and a manager who’s managing their own insecurities and anxieties as much as yours.

Solopreneurship gives you feedback in real time: the client doesn’t renew, the invoice doesn’t get paid, the phone doesn’t ring. It’s brutal, but it’s also honest, and honest feedback loops are how you actually get good at something instead of just getting good at surviving a bureaucracy.

But wait, there’s more

There’s another cost to employment that rarely makes the pro and con lists: the erosion of your own judgement. Spend a decade inside an organisation and you get very good at reading a room, anticipating what your boss wants, building consensus before you build a case.

These are real skills.

But they’re skills optimised for survival inside someone else’s structure, not for building your own.

Plenty of capable people leave a stable job after fifteen years and discover they’ve forgotten how to make a decision without a sign-off. Nobody warns them this atrophy is happening because it happens slowly, and it happens while they’re succeeding by every internal metric that matters.

Solopreneurship forces the muscle back into use, whether you want it to or not.

You decide the price, who you work with and on what terms, when the work is good enough to send and when it isn’t. Because there’s nobody above you to defer to and nobody below you to blame.

Some people find this liberating. Some people find it exhausting and retreat back to their predictable, regular old metronome.

Both reactions are legitimate data about who you are, not a verdict on your worth.

The tradeoffs

Employment trades your upside and your decision-making muscle for stability.

Solopreneurship trades your stability for the chance to actually find out what you’re capable of, at the cost of some genuinely rough months when you question the decision (and your sanity) to go it alone.

If anyone frames this as a simple upgrade from wage slave to free agent, shut them down. They’re selling something you don’t want.

Nonetheless, the risks are real

The risk of starting, operating and growing a solo business is real, and it compounds if you’re careless about it.

No emergency runway, no separation between personal and business cash, no pricing model that accounts for the non-billable hours: that’s how starry-eyed solopreneurs end up back in a job within eighteen months, poorer and more cynical than when they started. The risk of taking a wage is also real. Ask any of the 150,000 or more newly redundant tech experts who’ve found themselves thrown on the dung heap of AI efficiency in the last 18 months.

A wage will never let you build the muscle of pricing your own worth, chasing your own invoices, or sitting with the discomfort of a slow month without panicking into a discount.

Solopreneurship forces you to build that muscle whether you like it or not. Once it’s built, it doesn’t go away.

The asset you build

The actual asset here isn’t the upside or the flexibility. It’s the judgement: the willingness to trust your own read of a situation when there’s nobody in the room to check with.

If you’re weighing this up right now, don’t ask which path is more certain. Employment already won that argument and it will keep winning it, every time, on paper.

The real question is whether you can tolerate the arrhythmia long enough to find out what your ceiling actually looks like once nobody else is setting it for you.
